Do you have basketball on your calendar tomorrow? I do– for a little while anyway!
We’re down to the Final Four, and my expectation is the team whose players perform most consistently will win. We see this over and over in sports, life, and business because our habits are ultimately responsible for our results. Part of the reason I love college basketball is because it gives us the opportunity to observe consistency in action.
Just look at last Friday’s Sweet Sixteen matchup between the Florida Gators and the Wisconsin Badgers. When Chris Chiozza hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to clinch the win for Florida, it was consistent practice and coaching that made it possible. Likewise, when the Gators lost to the University of South CarolinaSunday, it was the Gamecocks who played a more consistent game (especially in the second half).
How does consistency impact your everyday life? Well, it’s not just about getting the same exact hamburger every time you go to McDonald’s. Consistency can save lives.
Think of the last time you got on an airplane. Isn’t it great the pilot had mastered the discipline of consistency? We certainly don’t want our safety left to chance, and we’d never trust a pilot who could only land a plane some of the time.
And just as we expect high levels of consistency from our pilots, we should also demand it from ourselves.
Think about which aspects of your life would benefit from more consistency. Is it your mindset? Your faith? Do you need to be more consistent in expressing your love to all the people you care about?
If you’re like most of us, you probably said “yes”. The key is to remain conscious of your need to be consistent. Write “BE CONSISTENT” on a sticky note and put it on your bathroom mirror. Stick another one on your dashboard, computer monitor, and anywhere else you need to be reminded.
Have fun with this!
